Death: Marie Trainer Car Accident, Haldimand Councilor And Former Mayor Dies Following Car Crash

Marie Trainer Death, Obituary – Marie Trainer, a beloved and long-serving figure in Haldimand County politics, has passed away, leaving a legacy marked by her deep-rooted commitment to public service and community advocacy. Trainer, who was a sitting Ward 4 councilor and former mayor, died on October 31 following complications from a car crash on September 7.

Her son, Steven Trainer, announced the passing on social media, reflecting on her final moments. “At 7:30 this morning, our beloved mother passed away from complications due to her September 7th car accident,” he shared. Trainer’s political career spanned nearly four decades, beginning in 1985 when she was elected as a councillor for the Hagersville ward.

She served as mayor of Haldimand from 1991 to 1993 and later led the newly amalgamated Haldimand County from 2003 to 2010. Known as the “People’s Mayor,” Trainer was a steadfast advocate for rural values and sustainable development, resonating with constituents through her dedicated approach and community-centered values. She won two countywide mayoral elections before losing the position in 2010.

A figure both respected and controversial, Trainer garnered national attention during the 2006 standoff at the Douglas Creek Estates in Caledonia. Her comments during the Indigenous land dispute drew both support and criticism, reflecting her willingness to engage on difficult issues.

Despite losing her mayoral seat in 2010, Trainer continued her political journey, running for various positions until she successfully reclaimed a spot on the council in 2023 after a narrow win in a Ward 4 by-election.

Throughout her career, Trainer championed causes close to the community, most recently opposing a developer’s proposal to build 15,000 homes near the Stelco steelworks in Nanticoke. Her strong stance against overdevelopment aligned with her goal of preserving Haldimand County’s agricultural and rural character.

Haldimand County has expressed deep sorrow over Trainer’s passing, lowering flags at the county administration building in Cayuga in her honor. Statements from county officials highlighted her unwavering dedication, even attending council meetings from her hospital bed after her accident. Chief Administrative Officer Cathy Case praised Trainer as a “kind, dedicated civil servant with unwavering determination,” while Mayor Shelley Ann Bentley acknowledged that she will be remembered for her passion for Haldimand and for serving the community with heart and grit.

Trainer’s passing comes just a few months into her latest term, and her vacant seat raises questions about how the county will move forward with less than two years left in the term. Haldimand County has not yet decided how to fill the seat, though a by-election was held earlier this year after former Ward 4 Councillor Natalie Stam resigned due to health reasons. The council will likely discuss whether to appoint a representative or hold another by-election to honor Trainer’s commitment to the democratic process.

Marie Trainer’s legacy will be felt for years to come. Her roots in farming, coupled with her deep ties to the community of Hagersville, earned her the respect and admiration of those she served. A great-grandmother in her late 70s, she leaves behind a family and community that mourns her loss but remains inspired by her enduring spirit and commitment to public service.
