Known for her profound connection to the community and her vibrant on-air presence, Tracey left an indelible mark on the South Florida media landscape.
Tracey’s career spanned decades and included roles such as news director at Miami’s Hot105 radio station, where she hosted “Hot Talk with Jill Tracey,” a Sunday evening show focused on community engagement and social issues. Her contributions to journalism extended beyond the microphone. As a past president of the South Florida chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ)
Tracey was a champion of diversity and worked tirelessly to elevate the voices of Black journalists and promote equity in the newsroom. Reflecting on the challenges for women of color in media, she once noted, “Doing a great job in the space I love and being paid handsomely for it, that is the goal.”
Tracey’s journey into media began with her work as a South Beach gossip columnist. Her talent and charisma quickly propelled her to on-air positions, taking her to cities like Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, and finally back to Miami. Her deep-rooted commitment to community involvement and her skill in engaging listeners made her a well-known figure in South Florida. She collaborated frequently with fellow Hot105 personality James T, with whom she shared an enduring professional partnership and friendship.
At the time of her death, Tracey was campaigning for a commissioner position in Hollywood’s District 2. If elected, she would have succeeded Linda Anderson, the city’s first Black commissioner. Her run for office reflected her lifelong dedication to public service and advocacy for local communities.
Recently, Tracey faced health challenges but remained resilient and active in her career and community efforts. “Her legacy will continue to inspire and uplift those she touched throughout her life,” said NABJ South Florida chapter president Calvin Hughes in a statement honoring her memory.
The community mourns her passing, remembering her infectious laughter, unwavering spirit, and dedication to making a difference. Funeral arrangements are pending, and a GoFundMe has been organized in her honor.
